Fire
Before
Prepare:
- Install smoke detectors and be sure to check batteries and smoke detectors
every month.
- Install A-B-C type fire extinguishers in the home or office.
- Post emergency numbers near telephones.
Electrical wiring:
- Replace wiring if frayed of cracked. (call an electrician if you are not
sure)
- Wiring should not be under rugs or over nails.
- Do not overload outlets or extensions.
- Outlets should have cover plates and no exposed wiring.
Practice your escape plan:
- Draw a floor plan with at least two ways of escaping every room.
- Choose a safe meeting place outside the home.
- Practice using your developed escape plan.
- Practice lying low to the ground when escaping.
- Learn to STOP, DROP to the ground, and ROLL if clothes catch on fire.
During
Esaping the fire:
- Get out of danger quickly and safely.
- Do not use elevators to escape.
- Use stairs to escape.
- Stay low to the ground.
- Cover mouth with a cloth to avoid inhaling smoke and gases.
If in a room with a closed door:
- If smoke is pouring in around the bottom of the door or it feels hot, keep
the door closed.
- Open a window to escape or for fresh air while awaiting rescue.
- If there is no smoke at the bottom or top and the door is not hot, then
open the door slowly.
- If there is too much smoke or fire in the hall, close the door shut.
After
Check for injuries:
- Give first aid where needed.
- Seriously injured or burned victims should be treated and transported by
professional medical help immediately.
- Call for professional medical assistance.
